Chapter 11 — Tristan

I’d managed a couple hours of fitful sleep on the plane. No movie was distracting enough, I couldn’t concentrate on my book or magazines, so I just sat there with my eyes shut.

I hated leaving Ginny so soon after our wedding. It certainly wasn’t the start I’d planned on for our marriage but when we’d arrived from Vegas, I had three messages from my mum to call immediately, so I knew it had to be important. I called her as soon as we got into the room, and I’d never heard her so broken up. The conversation played over and over in my head, thinking, searching for any clues I could’ve missed.

“Tris, darling,” she said. “Your father’s fallen ill and has been taken to hospital. I’m not sure how—” my heart leapt as I’d heard my mother’s voice break.

“Mum, tell me. What’s going on?” I’d felt so bloody helpless. A feeling I loathed. “You can’t tell me anything? Is it so bad he won’t be…alive, when I get there?”

Her response scared me, “I think it’s best you come home son, as quickly as you can,” is all she’d said.

When I was on the phone, Ginny immediately saw that something was seriously wrong. She’d sat down next to me, taken my hand and quietly waited for the conversation to end.

Ginny’s an angel. She’s one in a million, really. She wasn’t upset in the least when I told her I had to go. She was just concerned about me and my family…I guess our family now.

I’d thought about asking Mike to pick me up from the airport but decided to take a cab straight to the hospital from there. Although he was practically family, I wanted to gather my thoughts and go to see my father alone.

As the cab drew closer, I phoned Mum and heard her breathe a sigh of relief when she answered. “Oh Tristan, thank goodness you’re home.”

“I’m on my way, Mum, almost there. Where in the hospital should I go? I know these places can be a maze. What ward is he in?”

“Hold on a second, I have to go into the hallway, your father’s sleeping.” I heard the rustle of her clothes against the phone, then the click of the door. “When you come in through the main doors you’ll turn to the right. It’s a long hallway, past a nurse station.”

“Okay…” Tristan replied as the cab tilted through a roundabout.

Her voice wavered slightly as she continued, trying desperately to sound cheerful. “Just follow the signs for Palliative Care, through one set of double doors, you’ll find another nurse station—”

“Wait, hold up. Mum, did you just say palliative care? As in hospice?”

“Yes, dear,” she paused, the only sound breaking the silence was a quiet sniffle. “Your father will be glad to see you.”

I tried to be strong for her and was glad she couldn’t see the tears in my eyes. “I’ll be there soon, Mum.”

Hospice care. I didn’t think it was anything as serious as that.
